Should you buy OSHA 10 or OSHA 30?

OSHA 10 introduces fundamental safety and health hazards, worker rights and common prevention practices. It is often the starting point for employees without supervisory responsibilities. OSHA 30 spends substantially more time on hazard recognition and safety topics and is generally more appropriate for supervisors or employees with added responsibilities.

But employer policies and state or local rules can dictate the actual card. Don’t assume that OSHA 30 is an upgrade you automatically need, or that a 10-hour card satisfies a requirement for 30 hours. Ask the hiring manager, union, contractor, site safety manager or state agency for the exact card name.

Construction vs. General Industry

The Construction Outreach curriculum generally centers on construction hazards and 29 CFR 1926. The General Industry curriculum uses topics pertinent to 29 CFR 1910, such as manufacturing, warehouses and other nonconstruction workplaces. These aren’t interchangeable merely because the course has the same number of hours. If you’re uncertain, describe your actual job duties and workplace to your employer before paying.

How the two training providers compare

360training / OSHAcampus publishes separate Construction and General Industry 10- and 30-hour courses. Its updated online listings describe self-paced, mobile-friendly lessons, knowledge checks, downloadable course completion and a mailed DOL student card.

ClickSafety publishes online Construction 10- and 30-hour courses, currently priced $59 and $159. Its official 30-hour listing describes English and Spanish course selections, an immediate course-completion certificate and a DOL student card mailed after completion. Check the current language and card-delivery terms for the exact product you select.

Both are on OSHA’s list of authorized online Outreach providers. Neither company is the U.S. Department of Labor. OSHA does not personally teach students on those commercial websites, issue worker occupation licenses through Outreach or guarantee that one course fulfills every job-specific training requirement.

What the DOL card means

When you complete an authorized Outreach course, you receive a student course-completion card. That is evidence that you completed the appropriate Outreach program, not a permit to operate machinery, supervise a hazardous-waste cleanup, or perform tasks your employer has not trained you to do. Specific OSHA rules may separately require demonstrations, practical evaluations, respiratory training, fall protection, or instruction on actual workplace hazards.

Checklist before paying

  1. Exact course track: Does your employer require Construction or General Industry?
  2. Required hours: Is the required card OSHA 10, OSHA 30, or a different training program entirely?
  3. Online acceptance: Are there project, state, employer or union-specific restrictions?
  4. Total price: Verify promotions, additional required fees, and refunds before purchasing.
  5. Completion deadlines: Confirm allowable course duration, identity requirements, card mailing and your job-start date.

Frequently asked questions

Is an OSHA 10 card a certification or license?

No. It is an OSHA Outreach student course-completion card. It demonstrates completion of general hazard-awareness training, not a professional license or proof of skills certification.

Will an OSHA 30 course automatically meet my employer’s requirement?

Not automatically. You need the correct industry track and course level. Your employer may require additional training relevant to your work, even when you hold an OSHA 30 card.

Does OSHA directly approve every training website advertising OSHA 10?

No. Only use current, OSHA-authorized online Outreach training providers for official online student cards. The government list is the source to verify authorization.
