Commercial driver education includes licensing knowledge, behind-the-wheel instruction, endorsement-specific theory, and optional preparation courses. Not every online CDL product fulfills a federal ELDT requirement.
Common learning paths
- Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory for applicable Class A and Class B applicants.
- Behind-the-wheel training with an eligible registered provider when required.
- ELDT theory for a first-time Hazardous Materials (H), Passenger (P), or School Bus (S) endorsement.
- Tanker (N) endorsement knowledge preparation and other supplementary training.
Know what the course does
A completion record for an online theory course is not itself a commercial driver’s license or endorsement. The underlying state licensing and skills/test process still applies. Some endorsements have separate requirements.
Confirm the training provider
For ELDT-covered training, check the provider’s listing in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, including its listed training types.
How we compare
- Which ELDT category or endorsement the provider actually offers.
- Whether the product covers theory only or an additional training component.
- Reporting, completion, enrollment, and support information confirmed by the provider.
